Creating Personas

Creating Personas

Description:

In design development, be it for User Research, UX or UI, personas are often times crucial for visualizing the type of people we are designing a product for.

Xtensio is a good template to sample for free what its like to create persona's that covers most of the wants and needs from the product.

When creating persona's we need problem statements to solve, for this self exercise we will create bogus but relevant problems

Problem Statement 1 :

Designing a banking/cashless app for all ages

Analysis :

Given this problem statement, we can gain some insight from the current solutions in Singapore, with its recent move to promote online wallets and cashless purchasing with local apps apps such as "DBS Paylah" and "OCBC Pay Anyone". We can also look at other local apps that offer online wallets such as "Grab", "Fave Pay", etc.

For the case of this exercise we will exclude PayNow, which has its transactions done directly from the persons linked bank account to the recipients bank account.

When creating persona's, I like to begin with 3 variants, the ideal user, the teachable, and the problem user.

Persona\s :

PS2-Teachable.png
PS3-Problem.png

As you can see, this 3 personas gives us a idea of the spectrum of users, from the most likely to use a banking/online wallet to the least likely. This is important as we need to account for both ends and middle of the spectrum when designing a product to address each sides problem.

Creating these personas also help us extract ourselves from the design process as often we insert our own opinions and biases when trying to design a product. But when you have a visible chart of characteristics, goals and frustrations, it makes it easier to identify when the designers are introducing their own biases into the product that might or might not help the target audience.

Overall, there are definitely much more persons you can create when dealing with issues, but for this exercise I chose these 3 to showcase as they are the ones I like to start with to help me plot the spectrum before fine tuning the persona's goals and frustrations to better target the products target audience.
